The August birthstone, peridot, symbolizes strength. It is sometimes called the evening emerald for its light green color. It was once believed that the green peridot crystals found in volcanic ashes were the tears of the volcano goddess Pele, renowned in Hawaiian mythology for her power, passion, jealousy, and capriciousness.
The peridot is one of the few gemstones that occur in only one color: an olive-green. The intensity and tint of the green, however, depends on the percentage of iron that is contained in the crystal structure, so the color of individual peridot gems can vary from yellow, to olive, to brownish-green.
Like Pele, August birth celebrants are dynamic, self-confident and known to be highly dramatic. They are considered to be good organizers, with an ability to lead and inspire others. With traits such as warm, action-oriented and driven by the desire to be loved and admired, it’s no wonder that those born in August have an air of royalty about them.
The peridot gem, when set in gold is said to protect the wearer from nightmares, not that a soul born in the month of August couldn’t manage her own nightmares!
