May is the month of motivation! Our homes are being deep cleaned and our gardens are being sowed. The world seems to have become green overnight and as one of the most common colors around us, green gets lots of love from all languages. There are fifteen shades of green and the gemstone that represents the birth month of may is a beryl stone of green known as the Emerald. A brilliant, deep green that conveys a complex set of symbolism and emotions. Green is considered the most calming of all the colors on the color wheel. It encourages growth, reflection, peace and balance. Often referred to as the “stone of successful love,” the Emerald is said to open and nurture the heart chakra. Throughout history, the emerald’s green color is said to have “entranced humankind.” Its color is a symbol of new life and the promise of spring, which is why it is the birthstone of May.
For more than six thousand years the emerald has been a gem of fascination in many cultures. So prized, that carat for carat, a fine emerald may be two or three times as valuable as a diamond. Translated from Sanskrit the name we know it as now is believed to come from an ancient Persian word “marakata” meaning “the green of growing things.” The ancients associated Emerald with the Greek goddess Venus, the goddess of love and beauty, it and was said to protect lovers from unfaithfulness. If the heart was loyal, the gem would glow in a beautiful green color, but if the heart was went astray, it would turn a different, lifeless color. In addition, it was believed that wearing an Emerald would improve one’s memory and intelligence, enabling one to think clearly about the past, present, and future.
The May baby may grow to be stubborn or strong willed, both descriptive words which I believe to equal highly motivated. Born in May she loves to travel, is hardworking and high spirited. With a good imagination she loves to dream and will get lost in literature and the arts. Loving and practical in nature the lass born in May is surely a treasure with beauty to rival that of the rarest most perfect emerald.
Happy Birthday May Babies!
